About The Team

Welcome to the website for the FIRST robotics team combining rival high schools Grosse Pointe North and Grosse Pointe South: The Gearheads. The team, established in 2002, is in its fifth season. Team 1189 members keep in contact on the team forums during the off-season, and meet in the South auto lab every day after school during the 6-week build period starting in early January. Students work with parents and volunteers, under the leadership of Engineering Graphics teacher Ken Ginger, to create a robot with which to compete in March.

Annually, the FIRST Robotics teams like the Gearheads employ math, science, computer programming, problem-solving, business, management, and public relations skills to design and construct a robot for participation in several competitions, as well as learning in the process how to organize and contribute to a team.

The Gearheads have seen 5 alumni continue on to study engineering in college, along with others in science programs or at technical universities. As seen in the numbers above, we have finally achieved FIRST's recommended student:mentor ratio of 2:1.

We are sponsored and mentored mainly by General Motors, but are grateful for generous donations of both products and funds from National Instruments, JourneyEd, Buckhorn, Inc., and Amerisure this year.

The Gearheads are always recruiting new members. If you are interested in joining our team, please feel free to come to the next meeting announced in the forums, or contact our teacher mentor, Mr. Ginger, at Grosse Pointe South High School.
