Strategy

The strategy group is the group responsible for all of the tactical decisions concerning the robot and its drive team. Strategy is the group that at the beginning of the season has to put it into “overdrive” and really work efficiently to decide what the robot needs to accomplish.

Strategy is responsible for:

  • The tactical analysis of the game
  • Planned operation of robot
  • Drive team selection (coach and drivers)
  • Drive team operations, preparations and competition organization
  • Organizing driving practices

We use a program called Decide Right to make crucial decisions involving what action the robot should perform. This tool helps us qualify our findings and to put numbers behind our hypothesis. Decide Right is a decision matrix that aids in the making of a decision. In addition to Decide Right, we use many Microsoft Excel spread sheets.

Driver Selection Process:

These are in chronological order. To get to section 2, you must pass the requirements of section 1; to get to section 3, you must pass the requirements of section 2.

1. Only people that have satisfied the Team Meeting AND Build season participation requirements that are stated in the Gearhead Handbook will be allowed to be drivers.
A.More than 50% attendance
2. You must pass the written test with a 90% *
A. * you can have ONE retake (of the same test) if on the first try you get a 65% or greater
3.You must take a driving test
A. This will be actual driving of the robot (Charlotte + Mule)
B. An obstacle course will be set up and the drivers will be ranked relative to each other

The top four obstacle course drivers will be chosen as potential drivers. The four potential drivers will then be reduced to two by the strategy group leader and Mentor. Additional tests might be administered to settle a tie. Back-up drivers will be the two potential drivers that were not chosen. This process provides an easy means of selecting our best drivers that will be dedicated to our success.

Match Time Roles:

  • Coach: Setup/takedown/preparation of operator interface and corralling rest of Drive Team before match starts
  • 2 Drivers: Positioning of the robot (on and off field)
  • Robocoach: In charge of signaling device and the cart
